Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most heavily traveled times of the year. The National Safety Council (NSC) has reminded drivers, whether working or traveling, to stay safe during this time.

It’s no secret that the traffic during Thanksgiving weekend is heavier and more hectic than usual. With many families traveling long distances or seeking out holiday sales, the driving hazards increase. Professional drivers (those who drive for work) should be aware that they might face more hazards than normal over this period of time.

The NSC has estimated that 418 traffic fatalities and 44,700 injuries could occur over Thanksgiving weekend this year.

Here are some “sensible precautions” that could make all the difference:

  • Always wear a seatbelt, even if you have a short drive
  • Don’t use any electronics while driving — even hands-free devices
  • Be aware of any bad weather that could be coming your way
  • Plan ahead by preparing for unexpected traffic patterns on your usual routes. Check traffic reports before you leave
  • Drive defensively, since many people on the roads this weekend might be in a rush or distracted and may not always make the best driving decisions. Also, keep an eye out for erratic behavior from other drivers who might not be familiar with the roads they’re traveling on, and
  • If you’re working long hours over this weekend, review these sleep tips to help prevent drowsy driving. One study revealed that drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving, so be sure you’re taking precautions to keep yourself alert.
